Down Through the Old Kingdoms: our Chiang Mai to Bangkok Tour
Four days and three nights travelling south, from the mountains to the delta. The route reads like a timeline in reverse: you start where the Lanna kingdom kept its own language, script and architecture, and you finish in the city that took over after Ayutthaya was destroyed.
The first morning belongs to Chiang Mai, then the road drops to Lampang for the finest teak temple in the country. Sukhothai follows, then the Chinnarat Buddha at Phitsanulok and the ruined royal city of Ayutthaya. The last full day belongs to Ayutthaya: the royal temples, the Buddha head held in the tree roots and the city museum, before the drive back into Bangkok in the afternoon.
The tour ends in Bangkok, which makes onward connections easy. Your final day carries no program at all: rest, shop, or ask us in advance to add an optional excursion or a custom extension, and your driver will collect you for the airport at a time that suits your flight.

Highlights
Sample Itinerary
After breakfast you meet your guide and private driver at the hotel and set off south towards Sukhothai. The morning belongs to the great temples of Chiang Mai: Wat Chedi Luang, which once housed the Emerald Buddha, then Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan, the finest Lanna architecture in the city. Outside the old walls comes Wat Umong, the tunnel temple, set in ancient forest where the noise of the city disappears. Further south you stop at Lampang for Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a fortified compound and one of the oldest and best preserved wooden temples in Thailand, known for its elaborate carving. Lunch is included at a local restaurant along the way. You reach Sukhothai in the late afternoon: transfer to the hotel, check-in and time to rest. Overnight in Sukhothai.
After breakfast your guide and driver meet you at reception. The day begins inside the history of Sukhothai, the first capital of Siam, whose name means the dawn of happiness. You explore the Sukhothai Historical Park (UNESCO), where time seems to have stopped among tall temples, lotus ponds and seated Buddhas. You can walk, ride a bicycle, take the local tram or, for a supplement, hire a golf cart to move easily between the ruins. After the included lunch at a local restaurant you leave Sukhothai and head south, stopping at Phitsanulok for Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan. This is one of the most important shrines in the country: it holds the Phra Buddha Chinnarat, a gilded bronze widely held to be the most beautiful Buddha in Thailand for its perfect proportions. The road then crosses the farmland of the central plains and reaches Ayutthaya in the late afternoon. Transfer to your hotel, check-in and overnight.
After breakfast you meet your guide and driver and head into Ayutthaya, capital of the kingdom of Siam and today one of the most important historical sites in Thailand.
The day opens at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the most representative temple of the old city, known for its three tall chedi. Next is Wiharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit, which holds a large and much venerated Buddha image, then Wat Mahathat, famous the world over for the Buddha head held in the roots of a tree, and the Ayutthaya Museum, where the history, art and culture of the capital are laid out.
Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon you visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, with its great chedi and rows of Buddha statues, and Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan, one of the most revered temples in Ayutthaya, known for its colossal Buddha image.
When the visits are done you drive back to Bangkok, arriving in the afternoon.
After breakfast and check-out the time is yours, for a rest or for whatever you feel like doing. At the agreed hour you meet your driver for the transfer to the airport and the flight on to your next destination.
The itinerary may change due to weather conditions or other unforeseeable circumstances.

Do I need a visa to visit Thailand?
Entry requirements for Thailand depend on your nationality, so there is no single answer that applies to every traveler. As of August 2026, citizens of more than 90 countries can enter for tourism without a visa and are granted a 60-day stay on arrival, extendable once by a further 30 days at an immigration office. Travelers from other countries must apply for a visa before they set off.
Two requirements apply to almost everyone: a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the country, and the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, which you complete through the online form before you arrive.
Important: always check the rules currently in force for your own nationality with the Thai embassy or consulate in your country before you book, as regulations can change quickly. If you are unsure, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
When is the best time to visit Thailand?
Thailand enjoys a tropical climate, but the seasons vary from one region to another:
| Period | Climate and recommended areas |
| November - February | Cool season (high season): the best time of year. Ideal for the North and the Andaman Sea (Phuket, Krabi). |
| March - May | Hot season: high temperatures. Excellent for the Gulf islands and for diving. |
| June - October | Rainy season: short showers. The Gulf islands (Koh Samui) are often less affected. |
