Ethical Elephant Sanctuary near Krabi: feeding, mud spa and no riding
The Aonang Elephant Sanctuary exists to give a second life to elephants rescued from exploitation. These animals were not born in the forest and could not survive in it, so the sanctuary works to give them the healthiest and kindest environment it can, with the guarantee that they will never again work in logging or in the forced tourism trade. Nobody rides the elephants here: there are no saddles, no chains for show and no tricks, and visitors stay on the ground alongside the mahouts.
A guide starts by telling you the story of each elephant in the herd and explaining what ethical care actually means in practice. You then learn to make their food, nutrient balls and fruit, and feed them from your own hands. After that comes the mud spa, which is not a game for visitors but the way elephants protect their skin from sun and parasites, and finally the water, where you help rinse the mud off. It is a half day, it suits families, and the money you pay goes straight into their upkeep.

Sample Itinerary
Pickup at your hotel reception and transfer to the sanctuary (times vary by area: Krabi Town 08:00/13:00, Ao Nang 08:20/13:20, Klong Muang 08:30/13:30). At the end of the visit you are driven back to your hotel.
An experienced guide welcomes you, tells you the story of the elephants who live here and explains why ethical care matters. There is no riding at any point of the visit.
You learn to prepare the elephants’ favorite food, from nutrient balls to fruit, and then have the pleasure of feeding them straight from your hands.
Join the elephants for a mud bath. The mud is not a game: it is what protects their skin from the sun and from parasites.
Follow your new giant friends into the water pools to cool them down and rinse the mud off their skin, brushes in hand and feet on the ground.
After the bath it is time to say goodbye to the herd. Snacks and seasonal fruit are served before the drive back.

What happens in case of bad weather?
Safety is our priority. If weather conditions make an activity dangerous or inadvisable, the excursion will be:
- Rescheduled: we will try to move the activity to another day of your trip.
- Replaced: if rescheduling is not possible, we will offer an alternative activity of equal value.
- Refunded: if neither rescheduling nor replacement is possible, you will receive a full refund for the excursion you were unable to take.
Please remember that rain during the wet season rarely spoils an entire day. You will always be informed in advance of any changes.
What are the pick-up times?
All meeting and pick-up details are clearly stated in your final travel documents (which you receive about 3 weeks before departure).
- Time: we will let you know the exact pick-up time. Please be ready at the agreed place at least 15 minutes beforehand.
- Pick-up point: in most cases the pick-up takes place directly in the lobby of your accommodation (if it lies within the areas covered by the service). If it does not, we will tell you the nearest meeting point.
What should I bring with me on the excursions?
For every excursion we provide a list of recommended items. In general, we always suggest:
- Suitable clothing: for example, long pants and no low-cut tops when visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok, light and breathable clothes for hot areas, a swimsuit, or comfortable shoes for light trekking.
- Protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Hydration: water, especially on hot days.
- Vouchers and documents: where required, a copy (digital or printed) of your booking voucher.
Are meals or drinks included during the tours?
