Lopburi: Khmer ruins and the city of monkeys
Lopburi is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, and it is known above all for one thing: the monkeys. Hundreds of macaques live in and around Prang Sam Yot, the 13th-century Khmer temple in the old center, and move through the ruins as though the place belonged to them.
Around it stand the remains of King Narai's palace and other temples from the Khmer period, in a city that almost no tourist itinerary bothers to include. On our tours that stop in Lopburi the visit usually falls on the first day, heading north out of Bangkok.
