From Silk to Sunset: the Jim Thompson House and Wat Saket in One Afternoon
An afternoon built around the contrasts that make this city what it is, moving from collected Asian art to the ordinary working life of the canals. It opens with what James H.W. Thompson left behind. An American architect who came to Southeast Asia during the war and stayed, he rebuilt Thailand's hand-woven silk industry almost single handed and made it known abroad, then walked out for a stroll in the Malaysian highlands in March 1967 and was never seen again. The case has never been solved. His home, six traditional teak houses brought in from around the country and reassembled beside a canal, is now the museum that holds his collection of Southeast Asian art, and the rooms are still laid out as he lived in them.
To reach the Old City we travel the way people who live here do, on a public boat along Khlong Saen Saep. It is the closest thing Bangkok has to an underground line on water, used by thousands of commuters every day: a short, loud, entirely local crossing that skips the rush-hour traffic altogether and gives you photographs nobody else comes home with. The boat drops us at the foot of Wat Saket, the Golden Mount, and an easy spiral climb past the bells brings us to the gold stupa at the top just as the light turns, with a 360-degree view over the rooftops of the old town. Heading back, we stop in front of Wat Suthat to look at the Giant Swing, the red teak frame that stands lit against the night sky.

Pickup from your hotel reception. You meet your guide and head into the center of town to begin the afternoon, combining the comfort of a private vehicle with the fun of the local transport that Bangkok actually runs on.
The first stop is the teak house of James H.W. Thompson, the man who made Thai silk famous around the world. Known as the legendary American of Thailand, he personally oversaw the reassembly of these traditional houses in what is now a pocket of green surrounded by the city. We walk through the rooms, which hold a remarkable collection of antique Asian art, and go over the story of his disappearance in 1967.
Leaving the museum behind, we drop straight into the working rhythm of the city. To reach the Old City we board a public boat along Khlong Saen Saep. This is a genuine underground line on water, used every day by thousands of local commuters. It is a short, fast, thoroughly local crossing, ideal for unusual photographs and for skipping the rush-hour traffic entirely.
Off the boat, we are at the foot of Wat Saket. The climb up the artificial hill is an easy one, on panoramic steps that wind through greenery to the sound of the bells along the way. We reach the gold stupa at the top just as daylight gives way to the golden hour, for a 360-degree view over the rooftops of Bangkok at sunset.
Back down from the Golden Mount, and before we finish, there is a short photo stop in front of Wat Suthat to see the Giant Swing (Sao Ching Cha). At this hour the monumental red teak structure is beautifully floodlit, and it stands out against the night sky.
After the photo stop the tour comes to an end, with a comfortable transfer back to your hotel.

What are the pick-up times?
All meeting and pick-up details are clearly stated in your final travel documents (which you receive about 3 weeks before departure).
- Time: we will let you know the exact pick-up time. Please be ready at the agreed place at least 15 minutes beforehand.
- Pick-up point: in most cases the pick-up takes place directly in the lobby of your accommodation (if it lies within the areas covered by the service). If it does not, we will tell you the nearest meeting point.

- Hydration: water, especially on hot days.
- Vouchers and documents: where required, a copy (digital or printed) of your booking voucher.
