Along the Death Railway: Bridge over the River Kwai Tour from Bangkok
Kanchanaburi lies about two hours west of Bangkok, where the plain gives way to limestone hills and river valleys. This day trip puts that landscape next to the history of the Thailand-Burma Railway, built in 1942 and 1943 by Allied prisoners of war and by conscripted Asian laborers, thousands of whom died during the works. The day begins at the JEATH War Museum, which reconstructs the conditions inside the camps, and continues on foot across the Bridge over the River Kwai.
You then board a local train for the stretch of line that runs on wooden trestles along the cliff face above the river. It is a short ride and a quiet one: the track is still in daily use, and it passes the places where the work cost the most lives. At Tham Krasae station you can visit the cave shrine beside the rails, and after a Thai lunch the day closes at Wat Tham Suea, a hilltop temple looking out over the rice fields of the valley.

Sample Itinerary
Pickup at your hotel reception in Bangkok. You meet your private English-speaking guide and set off in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle towards Kanchanaburi province, about 145 km west of the capital.
The day starts at the JEATH War Museum, which reconstructs the bamboo huts the Allied prisoners were held in and documents the conditions they worked under. From there you walk across the Bridge over the River Kwai itself, the steel spans that replaced the original wooden bridge and that an award-winning Hollywood film made known worldwide.
You then board the local train for the run along the line laid by prisoners of war during the Japanese occupation. The track was cut into the rock face and runs above steep drops, following the river through the hills. It is a stretch worth taking quietly rather than as a photo stop.
Getting off at Tham Krasae station, you can look inside the cave beside the line, which holds a revered Buddha image and served as shelter for the Thai and Burmese laborers sent to the works. There is a wide view over the river from the wooden walkway, and then lunch of local dishes at a small restaurant nearby.
On the way back to Bangkok there is one last stop at Wat Tham Suea. This large Buddhist complex is worth the climb for its richly decorated halls, its big seated Buddha and its position above the rice fields of the valley below.
Once the visits are over, the return journey begins, with a direct transfer to your hotel in Bangkok.

What are the pick-up times?
