You set off at dawn on the ferry from Koh Samui to Don Sak (about 1.5 hours), then take a minivan to the lake (about 2 hours). On Cheow Lan you cruise by longtail between the limestone rocks, the famous “three rocks” of Khao Sam Kler included, stopping to kayak, swim and walk a short trail into the jungle. To take it in properly, stay the night in a floating hut.

- Pick speedboat or big boat according to seasickness: a speedboat is fast but bumpy; a big boat is slower but far steadier.
- Think about an overnight stay for Khao Sok: one day is doable but intense; a night in the floating huts makes it a much better trip.
- Steer clear of tours with poor animal welfare: go for elephant sanctuaries where the animals are watched and fed, never ridden.
